Typhoon Rai made initial landfall in Siargo Island, northern Mindanao, in the Philippines, on 16 December 2021. It carried gusts up to 270 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h. As of 21 December, at least 2.4 million people were affected across 10 regions. Around 684,000 people were displaced, with about 440,000 people still in evacuation centres. A total of 139,000 houses have been damaged, out of which 53,800 completely destroyed.
